A professional remedial teacher (R.T.er) provides custom-made professional help to pupils who got stuck in the educational learning process at a Primary or Secondary school. This help can be offered at school or in the remedial teacher's own practice. An rt’er is a teacher, that is to say someone who is qualified to teach in Primary Education (diploma Teacher Training College -PABO-) or in Secondary Education (Secondary Teacher Training-lerarenopleiding- or University) and has then attended a one-year full-time training or a two-year part-time training for remedial teacher. The training for remedial teacher is a post-Higher Vocational Education-HBO.
Remedial teaching within schools is mostly a task and sometimes a function. The job description of an rt’er is essentially different from that of an internal coach (ib’er) and the care coordinator in Secondary Education.
The tasks and qualifications of a remedial teacher can be found in the code of behaviour and the professional profile of the LBRT as well as in the model of competence and the nuclear roles.
As yet the profession of a remedial teacher is, unfortunately, not protected. Everyone can call himself remedial teacher and get to work as such. The National Professional Association for Remedial Teachers was, in 1955, the first association in education that drew up its own professional profile and code of behaviour. To be able to guarantee the quality of remedial teaching and the professionalism of remedial teachers the LBRT has established a registration. Only those members who meet the demands fixed by the association qualify for registration.
